Summary

The necessity of the formation of key chemical concepts on the propaedeutic stage of studying chemistry in the 5th-6th class starting from the system of concepts of the chemical reaction is discussed. The results of investigation of forming the initial views on transformation of substances and interpretation of physical and chemical processes by the sixth-grader are presented. Such means of teaching as the sign-symbolic (“molecular”) schemes used on the propaedeutic stage are shown to facilitate educational and cognitive activities of students and provide a deep understanding of key chemical concepts in the future.

Summary

The paper is devoted to the chemical tasks with logarithms and exponential functions offered at Chemistry Olympiads (such as “Lomonosov” and “Conquer the Vorobyovy Gory!”) and written entrance exams at MSU. To this purpose, all the tasks have been analyzed from 1990 to the present. The examples of tasks with logarithms and exponential functions as well as their solutions are presented. It is demonstrated that most of these problems are related with the Arrhenius equation and calculation of pH values, which traditionally cause difficulties for school students and applicants. It is shown that skills to work with logarithms and exponential functions are necessary in solving Olympiad problems and competitive tasks at written entrance exams.

Irene Joliot-Curie: outstending scientist and public figure

The article is devoted to the life and scientific achievements of the Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Irene Joliot-Curie, the daughter of M. Curie. Her childhood and youth, work at the Radium Institute, joint work with F. Joliot-Curie on the study of atomic nuclei and the discovery of artificial radioactivity are described. Particular emphasis is placed on the work of Irene and Frederic Joliot-Curie, who paved the way for the discovery by other scientists of the neutron (Chadwick) and fission of uranium nuclei (Hahn and Strassmann). The postwar activities of I. Joliot-Curie in the Commissariat for Atomic Energy, the National Committee of the Union of French Women, in the World Peace Council, including the struggle against the use of atomic energy for military purposes, for the elimination of the threat of nuclear war are also considered.
