Mathematical Content of Chemical Tasks of Entrance Exams

The paper is devoted to the chemical tasks with geometric (planimetric and stereometric) content, that were offered to applicants at Chemistry Olympiads (such as "Lomonosov" and "Conquer the Vorobyovy Gory!") and written entrance exams at MSU. To this purpose, all the tasks was analyzed from 1990 to the present. The examples of tasks with geometric content and their solutions are presented. It is shown that finding the volume of a solid, the square of shapes, and angles of the triangle are the necessary mathematical skills in solving Olympiad problems and competitive tasks at written entrance exams on chemistry.

The secondary school system together with its school-leaving exam EGE (Unified State Exam) in chemistry still keeps to the traditional «short» form of Mendeleev's periodic table with VIII groups. At the same time, the international educational community and IUPAC use a more convenient «long» form with 18 groups. The article discusses the methodological characteristics of the short and long forms of the periodic table. Using its long form facilitates the use of terminology, eliminates logical gaps, facilitates the understanding electronic configurations of atoms and the concepts of valence and oxidation state.
