Summary

Diseases and drugs are usually very interesting for high school students and motivate students to learn and increase their achievements in chemistry. Research project "Modern pharmacopoeia analysis of aspirin" for high school students as an approach to problem based learning is discussed. Scenarios and protocols of the project are based on British and Russian Pharmacopoeias. Appearance, solubility, identification reactions, purity of aspirin as a substance are considered. Different ideas for students’ research and discussions are given. The fact that research project develops science learning, practical skills and teamwork abilities is pointed out.

An example of a web-quest “Tasks on mixtures, alloys and solutions”, which can be included separately in specific lessons on the subjects studied, or in the plan of an intriguing chemistry lesson in the 9th grade. It can also be used during extracurricular activities of profile orientation.

Some Facts from History of Chemistry

Summary

An undescribed tool, which is supposed to be a Regnault calorimeter, has been kept in the Moscow Polytechnic Museum for a long time. It was investigated in a frame of the educational project of Chemical Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Polytechnic Museum. In the present article, we describe the construction of the tool, the main principles of its use and the story of calorimetry evolution until the second half of the 19th century, a period the Regnault calorimeter was created.
