Summary

The influence of achievements of science on the school curriculum and contents of school textbooks in chemistry is discussed. Features of modern chemistry and its role in society are described, moral aspects of application of chemistry are considered. M.V. Lomonosov’s contribution into the development of glass making in Russia

The role of M. V. Lomonosov in the development of Russian glass science and technology is discussed. The first experiments in glass making conducted in 1748 were continued in subsequent years till the time of his death. The compositions of opaque glasses for mosaic tiles colored by metal ions (copper, iron, manganese, cobalt) and gold nanoparticles (“gold ruby glass”) were thoroughly elaborated. The study of mosaic tiles from museum collections made it possible their replication using modern equipment.
