Chemistry of salty, sour and bitter taste

The article describes the molecular mechanisms of taste transduction. Data about the taste receptors involved in the recognition of salty, sour and bitter tastes are given. Some physiological aspects of taste transduction are discussed. Concepts of receptors responsible for salty, sour and bitter taste, and their structure are considered. The role and mechanism of action of ion channels is discussed. Various groups of compounds responsible for the occurrence of salty, sour and bitter sensations are characterized.

The lesson is compiled for 10-graders (baseline) taught by a one-hour program (authors I. Novoshinsky, N. Novoshinskaya). The idea was to promote students’ interest through the goals and objectives of the lesson: to summarize the theme "Monosaccharides" and give an idea of challenging and exciting teacher’s profession through improvisation based on chemical knowledge. The technology used (role and play) was aimed at the preliminary collection of information for the lesson for presentation to the audience; modeling and solving business problems; creating a situation of success for every student. At all stages of the lesson positive motivation and students' interest in cognitive and creative activity can be seen.

Humphry Davy – outstanding English scientist beginning of the nineteenth century

The article is devoted to the life and work of the famous English chemist and physicist of the nineteenth century Humphry Davy. His childhood and youth, study of the properties of “laughing gas” and contribution to the creation of a respiratory therapy are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the Davy's electrochemical studies and in particular to discovery some alkali and alkaline earth metals. Davy's works on the study of halogens, creation of safe miner’s lamp, research of the protection of military ships against corrosion are considered. The accidents, which have occurred with Davy in the laboratory, are described too.
