The article discusses scientific and methodological aspects of the study in «chemical bonds». Article details the Pauling electronegativity scale. It is shown that covalent binding is a common factor for the metal, ionic, coordination, donor-acceptor and hydrogen bond. The methodological advantages of the octet rule for the initial study of the theory of chemical bonding are discussed. It is shown how a «standard» exceptions to the octet rule can be explained by the involvement of the electronegativity of the atoms and the method of resonance.
